Whether you’re new to making Facebook ads or not, you’ve probably felt the frustration of working hard on an ad and watching it fail to get the engagement you were hoping for. There are some simple techniques to use that will make your ads more effective and don’t add much complexity to making the ads. In fact, they may even make it easier than your current process. By simplifying your ads and using formatting that complements the way Facebook is used, you can seriously increase your ad engagement and get some returns on your hard work.
Don’t put too much text on images
When people see an ad with an image in it, their eye is drawn to what’s happening in the photo. They don’t want to spend time reading when they should just be able to absorb the message through the photo. Of course, if you have a specific goal like you would with any ad, you’ll need at least some text to give the viewer context. When you put text in a Facebook ad, use the small font in short bursts. You want the image to be the centerpiece of the ad, not the text.
Keep ad text brief
Again, people want to view their ads, not read them. According to the principle discussed above of allowing viewers to absorb an ad rather than read it, your text should be minimal. Think of short snippets that you can read within a second or two. If you think about an effective billboard, it’s usually only a few words that you can understand at a glance. Most of the time you’re not even looking directly at the text because the picture is what drew your eye. But still, your mind picks up what the text is saying in an instant, you absorb the information without getting bored and looking away first. When writing ad text, it will be more successful if it can be understood in just a second or two.
Use the vertical format for videos
Almost every single Facebook user is viewing Facebook on a mobile phone. Only 1.5% of Facebook users exclusively use a laptop or computer, while 81.8% exclusively use a mobile phone. When you’re using social media on your phone, you’re going to be holding the phone upright rather than sideways. Make your videos easier for people to watch by formatting them vertically, which will take up more of their screen. If your ads are horizontal, that adds another step for the viewer. While it’s not a physically demanding step, people aren’t going to take the time and inconvenience to do it—they’ll just scroll by.
Include some movement in your ads
Photos are a great way to catch the eye, that’s why image ads are so successful. But to make them even more eye-grabbing, add some movement to your ad. The human eye is naturally drawn to movement, so that gets a viewer’s attention the moment your ad shows up. There are free templates for making Stories ads that include movement, and there are also a few free apps that help create moving ads:
- Adobe Spark – Add text, images, and narration to a video
- Boomerang – Create video loops
- Hyperlapse— Make timelapse videos
Carousel format gives more bang for your buck
If you have a ton of images you would like to use, like if you’re a clothing store for example, then the carousel format for ads is a great choice. This allows you to pay the price of one ad, but throw multiple pictures into that ad that viewers can scroll through. If you have a new line of clothing that you’re advertising, you can make the ad about that line as a whole with multiple photos to give viewers a more complete look at what the line has to offer.
Always use a call-to-action
It may seem kind of silly that you have to tell customers who are already interested to “give you a call now!” to get them to reach out to you. You’re not really changing their mind with a call-to-action, you’re just pushing them in that direction. They’re already interested in what you’re offering, but not sure if they want to act this very moment. A simple “shop now” is a subconscious push to at least check it out. Without the CTA, they’re more likely to file your product away for ‘later,’ which often translates to ‘forget.’ But if your CTA brings them to your online store, they only click away from making a purchase. So, always use a CTA in your ads. It can’t hurt and it can definitely help.
