Did You Know Fresh Content Improves Your Google Ranking

Google looks for relevancy when choosing what websites to display in your search results. They have decided that for most searches, the newer, fresher content is much more likely to be relevant than old content. Makes sense. But how do they decide what content is fresh and how fresh it is? There are quite a few factors that affect content freshness in Google’s eyes. Keeping your content fresh in these ways will have a positive impact on your SEO, and therefore increase visitors to your website.

Freshness lowers over time (of course)
The most obvious factor of freshness is when the webpage was created. The day it’s created, it’s fresh. A few months later it’s less fresh. A year later with no changes to it and it’s stale.

Refresh your webpages with updates
A webpage you made two years ago can stay fresh if you regularly update its content. The more change on the webpage, the fresher you’ll make it. If you change one paragraph or a footer, you won’t see much impact. But if you change up most of the body text, it’s essentially as fresh a brand new webpage.

What you choose to change is important
The main value of any webpage is usually in its body text. That’s where the important, relevant information is. This means you can change the title, change the navigation menu, change the advertisements and comments, and none of those will have as much of an effect as changing the body text. That’s where the relevance of your webpage comes from, so that will have the biggest effect on freshness.

Change webpages often to retain freshness
When you’ve just made significant changes to a webpage, it’s going to be near peak freshness. But like creating a webpage and letting it age, if you don’t regularly update the webpage then it will go stale after a while. For most webpages, you ideally want to freshen them up once a month at least. The more often you can make meaningful changes, the less chance they have to lose their freshness.

Create new webpages whenever you can
Nothing is more fresh than a brand new webpage. This is why blogs have such high SEO value to websites, they give you the opportunity to create new webpages every day if you want to. You can come up with brand new ideas for blogs, or repurpose older ones as a brand new post when they become seasonally relevant again.

Links to your pages affect freshness, too
Freshness is not completely under your control. The rate at which you are getting your pages linked to by other sites matters. The faster growth you can get in people linking to your webpage, the more fresh your content will be considered. The age of links also matters. A few links from this month will contribute more to freshness than a few links from sites that were last updated two years ago. In fact, links from sites that aren’t fresh can bring your freshness down.

Quality content stays fresher, longer
Engagement is also a key metric in determining freshness. If your webpage is trending, it’s tough for Google to say it’s not fresh no matter how old it is. So, you can update a webpage every day but if the content isn’t worth engaging with, it’s not fresh in the right ways. Focus on creating quality content that is valuable for readers.
